St Helier is a delightful town, with some good shopping and a very pleasant environment. There are plenty of places to stop for a coffee, a glass of wine, or a famous Jersey ice-cream. Many of the streets are pedestrianised and there are squares to rest in, if you've shopped 'til you've dropped. There are two large cinema complexes and a large, modern leisure pool, which might be useful on rainy days.
One of the remarkable aspects of St Helier is that all the buildings in the town centre are beautifully maintained and decorated, often with rich, colonial architecture above eye level. You might want to join one of the regular guided walks through the town, to learn more about its history.
Parking is relatively easy and cheap, compared to main land Britain. Most places use pay-cards (which you can buy from most newsagents) or parking discs.
St Helier's name comes from an early Christian settler, who apparently became paralysed as a young boy. His pagan parents sent him to a local Christian missionary, who not only cured him, but turned him into a Christian. The family were so furious at this slight to their religious inclinations, that they had the missionary killed. Young Helier was not impressed with their lack of gratitude to his beneficiary, so ran away from home, to eventually settle in Jersey. Here, the locals credited him with keeping away the French pirates by the force of his prayers. Unfortunately, one day in A.D. 555, the Norman pirates invaded. The locals all fled, except for our friend Helier, so the French cut his head off.
